Is this quest really suppose to take this long? All the guides out there leads to nowhere.

Yes these numbers of monsters required to finish the quest are correct, it is not a bug.
You may create a suggestion if you believe it is too difficult.

Update: As suggested by players on Discord, hunt for the monsters actively, not by AFK-ing.
That way you can finish the quest in under 30 minutes.
